An Assessment of Reliability and Validity of Measuring Instruments used in Nursing Researches in Korea from 1996 to 1997

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to assess the reliability and validity of measuring instruments used in nursing researches, and to call attention of their misuse and build the guidelines about the presentation of instrument information. For study materials, 118 measuring instruments used in 53 original papers were selected form the Joumal of Nurses Academic Society published from January 1996 to December 1997.
Results show that 37 instruments(31.4%) did not report their reliability. Furthermore, 12(36.4%) of 33 instruments developed by the author did not report the reliability. The number of instruments that did not report their validity is 84(71.2%). Most of the instruments reported internal consistency. And the most frequently used reliability index is the calculation of Cronbach¢¥s alpha(n = 80, 93%). Content validity was tested in 24 instruments(51.1%) and construct validity was tested in 16(34%). There are some cases of misuse of reliability and statistical estimation method. They reported only reliability estimates from previous uses of an instrument and not considered measurement scale of items. Furthermore, 34 instruments that used in research carried out by two or more observers ( or interviewer) did not report interrater reliability. Also they have some mistakes by no consideration for reliability (23.3%) and validity(75.8%) after modification, addition and translation when using an instrument in an adapted way. The level of reliability coefficient value reported was not sufficient in 23 instruments(36.7%). 18(75%)instruments that considered content validity did not report the index of content validity(CVI).
